LOCKDOWN BRAIN-CHILD GROWS TO BIGGEST ANNUAL 5KM & OPEN CHARITY EVENT IN SA
When life gives you lemons, you host an event! This is how the SA BIG5K started – with a handful of people, living across SA, who decided not to let the lockdown keep them down.
Granted, this is not the only virtual 5KM initiative, but the vision of SA BIG5K pioneer, Ian Swanepoel, was bigger than just a 5KM fun-run around our yards. We started running and walking during lockdown. The world was struck by a life-threatening pandemic and here we were, stuck at home, economies tanking, and individuals and families taking strain in more ways than one. Take this lying down? Never.
“We wanted to make a difference and connect people across South Africa in an online community where we didn’t feel so alone. It gave us an opportunity to ‘get-up-and-go’ even when we didn’t feel like it”, Ian says. And so, the community of our first SA BIG5K grew from one to 1230 over a period of 3 months, with the committed members still running each week.
The bigger goal of the virtual event was to remind South Africans that we are a strong and capable nation. We are winners and we are survivors – we must just continue to move forward.
On 7 November 2020, we want to remind all South Africans that we are World Champions. Our SA BIG5K event marks this victory a year ago – our RUGBY WORLD CUP WIN. As we face the unknown and stand against the odds, we remember that our Bokke faced the same, and walked off the field as World Champions! So did every South African – big or small, male or female, of all languages, and all ethnic orientations – WE WON THE WORLD CUP RUGBY as a nation.
